Arba Minch — 'Forty Springs' — sits on a ridge above two great Rift Valley lakes split by a forested saddle the locals call the Bridge of God. Below bask some of Africa's biggest crocodiles; in the hills above, one people builds twelve-metre houses of bamboo. Three unforgettable half-days stack neatly here, and it's the gateway to the Omo Valley. Here's what to book.

## Key facts

- **The trio:** Lake Chamo boat safari · Nechisar · Dorze village
- **Star sight:** The 'crocodile market' — 5–6 m Nile crocodiles
- **Wildlife:** Zebra, gazelle & the 'Bridge of God' in Nechisar
- **Culture:** Dorze beehive houses, weaving & false-banana bread
- **Getting there:** Daily flights Addis → Arba Minch (~1 hr)
- **Time needed:** 2–3 days; gateway to the Omo Valley

## The Arba Minch trio

Three excursions define a visit, and most travellers do all three over 2–3 days:

- **Lake Chamo boat safari** to the crocodile market — huge crocs, hippo pods, pelicans and fish eagles (morning is best).
- **Nechisar National Park** game drive across the white-grass plains — Burchell's zebra, Grant's gazelle, and the stunning Bridge of God viewpoint between the two lakes.
- **Dorze village** in the Guge highlands (2,900 m) — beehive houses, master weavers, false-banana kocho bread and local arak.

The deeper story of each — plus the crocodile market and Konso — is in our [Natural Wonders of the South guide](https://ethiopiaunlocked.com/natural-wonders-konso-arba-minch/).

## Building your itinerary

A satisfying shape: day one, fly in and take the afternoon Chamo boat safari; day two, Nechisar in the morning and Dorze in the afternoon; day three, continue south toward Konso and the Omo Valley or fly back. Sunset from a ridge lodge over the two lakes, tilapia and a cold St George in hand, is southern Ethiopia's softest hour.

## Getting there & onward

Ethiopian Airlines flies Addis → Arba Minch daily (about an hour); most people fly in and tour by private 4x4 with a driver-guide arranged locally. Arba Minch is the natural launch point for the whole Omo circuit — [Jinka](https://ethiopiaunlocked.com/jinka-omo-valley-tours/), [Turmi](https://ethiopiaunlocked.com/turmi-hamar-omo-tours/) and [Omorate](https://ethiopiaunlocked.com/omorate-dassanech-tours/) lie south. Go September–March for dry roads; the lakeshore stays warm year-round. Bring binoculars, sun protection and cash in birr for park and boat fees.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the Lake Chamo crocodile market like?

It's a stretch of shoreline where dozens of enormous Nile crocodiles — some approaching six metres, among the largest left in East Africa — haul out to bask. A boat safari (best in the morning for calm water) keeps a safe distance while hippos surface nearby and fish eagles and pelicans work the reeds. Reckon on roughly US$35–50 per shared boat for 2–3 hours.

Can I combine Arba Minch with the Omo Valley?

Perfectly — Arba Minch is the northern gateway to the Omo circuit. A classic 6–8 day southern loop runs Addis → Arba Minch (fly) → Dorze → Chamo boat → Konso → Jinka/Turmi for the Omo communities → back. See our Jinka and Turmi pages, and the natural-wonders guide for Konso.

Is the Dorze village visit touristy?

It can be, but it's genuinely worthwhile: the Dorze build remarkable 12-metre beehive houses from bamboo and enset, and are Ethiopia's finest weavers. A good visit includes the weaving cooperatives, kocho flatbread made from false-banana pulp with honey and fiery data, and a taste of local arak. For a lower-key alternative, time it with the Thursday Chencha market.
