Three thousand years of Ethiopian identity begin in Axum, where granite needles taller than ten-storey buildings rise from a field of royal tombs and priests claim to guard the Ark of the Covenant. It's also the base for two of the north's great day trips — the oldest temple in Ethiopia and the cliff churches of Tigray. Here's what to book, and how it fits a northern circuit.

### Current status — Amhara, Tigray & Afar (northern Ethiopia)

- **US State Department:** Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” for Ethiopia overall, with **“Do Not Travel” for Tigray, Amhara and specific areas of Afar** (the advisory page shows a reissue date of 27 August 2026).
- **UK FCDO:** advises against all travel to Tigray and against travel to the whole of Amhara; in Afar, against all travel near the Eritrea and Tigray borders and against all but essential travel to the rest of the region.

Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar, the Simien Mountains, Axum, Gheralta and the Danakil all lie inside these regions. **Most travel insurance excludes claims in a region your government advises against**, including medical evacuation. Some operators still sell northern routes; we do not recommend booking them, and this page is information, not encouragement.

## The Axum city tour

The core visit is a guided circuit of the **stelae field** — the 24-metre Obelisk of Axum, the fallen Great Stele and King Ezana's leaning monument, each carved as a tower-house for the afterlife, with tombs beneath you can enter — then **St Mary of Zion** and the Ark chapel, the **Queen of Sheba's Bath**, **Ezana's inscription** (Axum's Rosetta Stone) and the **Dungur** palace ruins. A combined ticket runs about US$10–15; a licensed guide is essential to unlock the history. The full story is in our [Axum guide](https://ethiopiaunlocked.com/axum-obelisks-ark-guide/).

## The two great day trips

- **Yeha & Adwa**: the towering pre-Aksumite Temple of Yeha (8th century BC, Ethiopia's oldest standing building) combined with the granite hills of Adwa, where imperial troops defeated an invading European army in 1896 — a proud, moving day.
- **Gheralta cliff churches**: south into a Monument-Valley landscape of sandstone towers hiding some thirty rock-hewn churches — the jewel being Abuna Yemata Guh, a painted church reached by a real (short) rope-optional scramble high above the plain. One of travel's great mornings.

## Markets & everyday Axum

Between monuments, the **Axum market** — spices, coffee, woven goods — is the town's beating heart and a fine place for a cheap lunch and unhurried people-watching. Pilgrims fill the Zion compound at dawn on feast days, an unforgettable sight.

## Getting there & combining it

Fly Addis → Axum daily (about 90 minutes; northern-circuit flights often interlink via Lalibela or Gondar). One relaxed day covers the city; add a day for Yeha/Adwa or Gheralta. Axum pairs naturally with the [Danakil](https://ethiopiaunlocked.com/dallol-danakil-tours/) via Mekele and with Lalibela to complete the northern historical loop. Tigray's situation has fluctuated in recent years — check current advice and confirm with a local operator before booking; visiting supports the region's recovery.

## Frequently asked questions

What does an Axum city tour cover?

A guided half- to full-day covers the northern stelae field (the giant carved obelisks and royal tombs), St Mary of Zion and the fenced chapel said to hold the Ark of the Covenant, Ezana's trilingual inscription, the Queen of Sheba's Bath and the Dungur ('Sheba's Palace') ruins. A licensed guide is worth it here more than almost anywhere — unlabelled, the stones stay silent.

Can I see the Ark of the Covenant?

No — and neither can anyone else. Tradition holds the Ark rests in the Chapel of the Tablet beside St Mary of Zion, watched by a single guardian monk who never leaves and is the only person permitted to see it. You can stand at the fence and contemplate one of the world's great mysteries; that is the experience.

Which day trip from Axum is best?

For history, the pre-Aksumite Yeha temple (8th century BC, Ethiopia's oldest standing structure) paired with the Adwa battlefield where Menelik II defeated Italy in 1896. For adventure, the Gheralta cliff churches — above all Abuna Yemata Guh, reached by a genuine (short) rock scramble to a painted church on a pinnacle. Both are long but rewarding days with a driver.
