Debark is a scruffy highland town with one job: it is the door to the Simien Mountains, the most spectacular trek in Ethiopia. Here you pick up the scout the park requires, and choose your ambition — a half-day rim walk among four hundred grazing geladas, or a week-long traverse to the roof of the country. Here's how the tours work, what they cost, and which route to pick.

### Current status — Amhara, Tigray & Afar (northern Ethiopia)

- **US State Department:** Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” for Ethiopia overall, with **“Do Not Travel” for Tigray, Amhara and specific areas of Afar** (the advisory page shows a reissue date of 27 August 2026).
- **UK FCDO:** advises against all travel to Tigray and against travel to the whole of Amhara; in Afar, against all travel near the Eritrea and Tigray borders and against all but essential travel to the rest of the region.

Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar, the Simien Mountains, Axum, Gheralta and the Danakil all lie inside these regions. **Most travel insurance excludes claims in a region your government advises against**, including medical evacuation. Some operators still sell northern routes; we do not recommend booking them, and this page is information, not encouragement.

## How it's organised at Debark

Debark sits about three hours by road from [Gondar](https://ethiopiaunlocked.com/gondar-tours-and-day-trips/) (the nearest airport). At the park HQ you settle entry and camping fees and take on your **armed scout** (mandatory, ~US$8/day); a **guide** (~US$25–30/day) is optional but transforms a multi-day trek, and **mules** carry gear on longer routes. A fully organised 4-day trek — guide, scout, cook, mules, food, transfers — runs roughly **US$300–450 per person** in a small group through a reputable operator.

## What you'll see

The northern escarpment is a near-continuous kilometre-high cliff, and every day follows its rim from one impossible viewpoint to the next. The wildlife is the other half: **gelada** 'bleeding-heart' monkeys in huge grazing bands you can sit beside, **walia ibex** below the cliffs (the whole world population lives here), Ethiopian wolves on the high plateaux, and lammergeiers overhead. Camps sit at 3,250–3,600 m; nights are cold (–5°C at Chenek is normal).

## When to go & how it fits

**October–November** is the jackpot — post-rains green, wildflowers, washed-clean air; **December–March** is drier and dustier but reliably clear. Most travellers pair Gondar and the Simiens as the heart of the classic [10-day northern circuit](https://ethiopiaunlocked.com/ethiopia-itinerary-10-days/). Ensure your travel insurance covers trekking above 4,000 m — many standard policies cap out at 3,000 m.

## Frequently asked questions

How do I arrange a Simien trek at Debark?

Everything runs through the national park office in Debark. There you pay entry (~US$10/person/day) and camping fees, and take on a mandatory armed scout (~US$8/day). A guide is optional but strongly advised for multi-day treks (~US$25–30/day), and cooks, mules and muleteers can be added. Many travellers pre-book a full-service package through an operator; independent arrangements at the office can be cheaper if you're self-sufficient.

Can I just do a day hike, not a multi-day trek?

Yes. From Debark (or a lodge like Simien or Limalimo near the entrance) you can drive into the park and walk the escarpment for a few hours among gelada monkeys, with enormous views, then return — a superb taster. Day trips from Gondar do exactly this in one long day. For the classic scenery and wildlife, though, 3–4 days on the Sankaber–Chenek section is the real thing.

Is Ras Dashen worth it?

Honestly, for most people the escarpment is the experience and Ras Dashen (4,543 m) is a checkbox. Summit day is a long scree walk with a view no better than Imet Gogo's, and it stretches the trip to 7–9 days with serious altitude. If your time is limited, spend it between Sankaber and Chenek — that's where the best scenery and gelada encounters are.
