Eight centuries ago a king carved a new Jerusalem downward into red rock, and Lalibela remains the most extraordinary place of worship in Africa — eleven churches hewn from living stone, still filled with chant before dawn. A good tour does more than tick the famous cross-shaped church: it adds a cave church in the hills and a monastery near the clouds. Here's how to book Lalibela well.

### Current status — Amhara, Tigray & Afar (northern Ethiopia)

- **US State Department:** Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” for Ethiopia overall, with **“Do Not Travel” for Tigray, Amhara and specific areas of Afar** (the advisory page shows a reissue date of 27 August 2026).
- **UK FCDO:** advises against all travel to Tigray and against travel to the whole of Amhara; in Afar, against all travel near the Eritrea and Tigray borders and against all but essential travel to the rest of the region.

Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar, the Simien Mountains, Axum, Gheralta and the Danakil all lie inside these regions. **Most travel insurance excludes claims in a region your government advises against**, including medical evacuation. Some operators still sell northern routes; we do not recommend booking them, and this page is information, not encouragement.

## Touring the rock-hewn churches

The heart of any visit is a guided tour of the two church clusters — the northern group (including Bete Medhane Alem, the largest monolithic church on Earth) and the southeastern group with its tunnels — plus the free-standing, cross-shaped **Bete Giyorgis**. Two days lets you take the northern group in soft morning light, the southeastern group and a dawn service the next day, and Bete Giyorgis at sunset. Deeper detail, fees and etiquette are in our [complete Lalibela guide](https://ethiopiaunlocked.com/lalibela-rock-hewn-churches-guide/).

## The two great day trips

- **Yemrehanna Kristos** (~90 min NE): a jewel-box church built inside a cave, older than Lalibela's and built rather than carved — an Aksumite masterpiece in wood and stone. Half-day with a driver.
- **Asheton Maryam** (above town, ~3,700 m): a 13th-century rock-hewn monastery reached on foot or by mule, with sweeping Lasta-mountain views — a rewarding half-day hike.

Further afield, some itineraries add the cliff churches of Tigray/Gheralta — see our [Axum & Tigray tours page](https://ethiopiaunlocked.com/axum-tours-and-day-trips/).

## Village, market & coffee experiences

Between churches, the experiences travellers remember are the ordinary ones: a **coffee ceremony** in a village home, the **Saturday market**, and Lalibela's famous two-storey traditional round houses. Many guides fold these into a full-day tour at no great extra cost — ask.

## Getting there & when to go

Ethiopian Airlines flies Addis → Lalibela daily (about an hour); book domestic legs on your international ticket for roughly half price. October–March is dry and clear; for maximum atmosphere, Ethiopian Christmas (**Genna**, 7 January) fills the churches with up to 100,000 pilgrims — but book flights, hotels and guides months ahead. Bring slip-on shoes (removed at every church), modest dress and a torch for the tunnels. Security in the region has fluctuated in recent years, so check current advice and confirm with a recent traveller or operator before booking.

## Frequently asked questions

How are Lalibela church tours organised?

One US$50 ticket covers all eleven churches for five days. A licensed guide (US$20–30/day, arranged at the ticket office or your hotel) is strongly recommended — the symbolism, tunnels and hermit caves are easy to miss alone. A typical guided tour splits the northern cluster and the southeastern cluster across two half-days, saving cross-shaped Bete Giyorgis for golden hour.

Is Yemrehanna Kristos worth the day trip?

Yes — it's one of Ethiopia's most beautiful churches and completely different from Lalibela's. About 90 minutes' drive northeast, it was built (not carved) inside a cave on a foundation of olive-wood layers, in an Aksumite style, and survives largely intact. Combine it with a walk to the cave mouth; go with a driver and local guide.

How hard is the Asheton Maryam hike?

Moderate but high — the monastery sits near 3,700 m, a few hours' climb above town, so altitude makes it feel harder than the distance suggests. You can walk up (about 5 hours round trip) or ride a mule most of the way, then walk the final stretch. The reward is a 13th-century rock-hewn monastery and enormous views over the Lasta mountains.
