Ethiopia Unlocked is an independent travel publication about Ethiopia. We write the guides we wished existed when we first planned trips here: specific, honest about costs and logistics, respectful of the people and places we cover, and current.

How we work

Every guide is researched against first-hand accounts and checked against official sources — park fees, visa portals, festival calendars, airline schedules — before publishing, and revisited when things change. Where a fact moves faster than we can publish, we say so rather than quoting a number that will be wrong by the time you read it: Ethiopian prices in particular have moved sharply since the birr was floated, so we give ranges and tell you to confirm locally.

We publish in English and Amharic. The site is built for two audiences at once — visitors planning a first trip, and the Ethiopian diaspora navigating visits, money and property from abroad.

Corrections

We would rather be corrected than be wrong. If a price, opening time, route or entry rule in one of our guides no longer matches what you found on the ground, tell us on the contact page and we will verify and update it. Readers who have just travelled catch things before we do, and that mail is the most useful we receive.

How the site is funded

Three sources, all disclosed. Affiliate links to tour and booking partners: if you book through one it costs you nothing extra and funds the writing. Advertising, clearly labelled. And links to our own sister services, which are marked as ours rather than presented as independent recommendations.

Commissions never decide what we recommend — several guides advise against bookable products, and we do not accept paid guest posts or paid links. Affiliate links are marked rel="sponsored" and routed through /go/ so they are transparent and auditable. Full detail on the affiliate disclosure page, and what happens to your data on the privacy page.

What we are not

We are not a tour operator, a booking agent or a visa service. We cannot book your trip or intervene with an operator on your behalf — the guides are written so you can do those things yourself, with enough detail to avoid the expensive mistakes.
