For two centuries a dynasty of emperors built castles on a highland plateau north of Lake Tana, and today Gondar hands the traveller the richest half-day of history in Ethiopia — six fortresses in one walled compound, a church ceiling of a hundred winged angels, and the sunken bath that becomes the epicentre of the country's greatest festival. It's also the launch pad for the Simien Mountains. Here's what to book.

The Gondar city tour
The must-do is a guided circuit of the UNESCO Fasil Ghebbi royal enclosure — Emperor Fasilides' 1640s castle, Iyasu's palace, the library, banqueting hall and sauna, all glowing amber in afternoon light — followed by Debre Birhan Selassie, whose ceiling of cherub faces is Ethiopia's most reproduced image, and Fasilides' Bath in its banyan-strangled garden. Reckon on around US$200 for a private full day; shared group tours cost less. Add Kuskuam palace for the quieter, view-rich finish. The full architectural story is in our Gondar castles guide.
Simien Mountains day trips & treks from Gondar
Gondar is the gateway to the Simien Mountains. Popular options run from a single long day (drive to Debark, rim walk among geladas, back — around US$180) to 3-day trek packages that overnight in the range. Everything is arranged through Debark's park office; details and routes are on our Debark & Simien tours page.
Timkat & festival-timed tours
If you can align your trip with Timkat (19–20 January), Gondar is where to be: the tabot processions, all-night vigils and the dawn plunge into Fasilides' Bath are unforgettable. Operators run festival packages that lock in scarce beds and guide access — book by September. See the dates and how it unfolds in our festivals guide.
Logistics
Fly Addis → Gondar daily (about an hour); the airport is 18 km south, hotels arrange transfers. Stay near the Piazza for atmosphere or at Goha Hotel for the sunset city view. Most travellers give Gondar a full day, then transfer to Debark for the Simiens — the pairing is the backbone of the classic 10-day northern circuit. Bring cash in birr and modest dress for the church.
