The shape of the trip
Days 1–2: Addis Ababa. Land, acclimatise at 2,355 m, and give the capital its due — Lucy at the National Museum, Holy Trinity, Merkato with a guide, jazz at Fendika. (Full plan: 48 hours in Addis.)
Day 3: Bahir Dar. Morning flight (1 hr). Afternoon boat to the Zege Peninsula monasteries; sunset at the Blue Nile's first bend. If the falls are flowing (ask!), squeeze Tis Abay in next morning. (Lake Tana guide.)
Day 4: Gondar. Fly or drive (180 km, decent road, 3.5 hrs with a castle-worthy lunch stop). Afternoon in Fasil Ghebbi and Debre Birhan Selassie's angel ceiling. (Gondar guide.)
Days 5–6: Simien Mountains. Two-day taster: transfer to Debark, day-hike the escarpment among geladas, overnight at Simien or Limalimo Lodge, second morning walk, return. Trekkers: stretch to 4 days and drop Gheralta. (Simien guide.)
Day 7: Axum. Fly from Gondar (via Addis or direct when scheduled). Stelae field, St Mary of Zion and the Ark chapel, Ezana's stone — one unhurried day covers it. (Axum guide.)
Day 8: Gheralta, Tigray. The wildcard. Drive 2.5 hrs south into a Monument Valley of sandstone towers hiding Ethiopia's most dramatic churches. Climb (yes, climb — ropes optional, nerve required) to Abuna Yemata Guh, a painted church in a cliff face 250 m above the valley. One of travel's great mornings. Overnight Gheralta Lodge area.
Days 9–10: Lalibela. Fly via Addis morning of day 9 (schedules vary — this is the itinerary's one awkward hop; an agent earns their fee here). Two days for the two clusters, a dawn service, and Bete Giyorgis at golden hour.
